Edinburgh, Scotland:
Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland. It is a Gothic-style city with the cathedral smack dab in the city center. Edinburgh includes former towns and villages that still have retained much of their character. Popular sites in Edinburgh include Edinburgh Castle, Old Town, Princes Street, and the New Town.
Top 3 Things to do in Edinburgh:
Free walking tours: Upon my arrival, I did the Sandemann’s Free Walking tour which I highly recommend. I also did the Ghosts in Edinburgh to learn more about all the death that the city is known for. The British are known to be aggressive and rude, but Scottish people are the exception. They go out of their way to help you.
National Museum of Scotland – Free entry. I’d recommend no more than 1.5 hours here – though there is a lot to see. Make sure to check out the exhibitions on the evolution of fashion.
Bar hopping -Bar hopping in Scotland is fun. There are so many different types of bars with different types of music.
Best eateries in Edinburgh:
YoCoko – Serves a mix of Japanese, Chinese, and Malaysian food. It was really good! Also, I got a student discount.
Sainsbury Local – Get the £3 meal deal. Sandwich, chips or fruit, and juice. Scotland’s typical dish is haggis. It’s a combination of sheep heart, liver, and lungs.
Note: In Scotland, there are many student discounts so make sure to take advantage of them all. Even if that means dusting off that old college ID card!
Conclusion: Edinburgh is a gorgeous city with amazing architecture. Black travelers should be aware that the Scottish are openly racist. My racist experience left me scarred. You can read more about that here. However, I do recommend visiting Edinburgh.
